Better Hearing & Speech Month: Why It Matters for Your Child

Each May, we celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month (also known as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month)—a time dedicated to raising awareness about communication, hearing, and early intervention.

For families, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about how speech and language skills develop—and what to do if something doesn’t seem quite right.

Why Speech and Hearing Matter

Communication is at the heart of how children:

  • Express their needs and feelings

  • Build relationships and friendships

  • Learn in school

  • Develop confidence and independence

Hearing and speech are closely connected. When children can hear clearly, they’re better able to understand and use language. When challenges arise in either area, it can impact multiple parts of development.

What Skills Are We Talking About?

Speech and language development includes:

  • Speech sounds (how clearly a child talks)

  • Language skills (understanding and using words and sentences)

  • Social communication (interacting with others)

  • Listening and comprehension

  • Feeding and oral motor skills (in some cases)

Every child develops at their own pace—but there are general milestones that help guide expectations.

Signs Your Child May Need Support

While variation is normal, you may want to seek guidance if your child:

  • Isn’t using words or combining words as expected

  • Is difficult to understand for their age

  • Has trouble following directions

  • Gets frustrated when trying to communicate

  • Doesn’t respond consistently to sounds or their name

Early support can make a big difference in helping children build strong communication skills.

How Speech Therapy Can Help

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work with children to:

  • Improve speech clarity

  • Build vocabulary and sentence structure

  • Strengthen listening and comprehension

  • Support social communication skills

  • Address feeding or oral motor concerns when needed

Therapy is play-based, engaging, and tailored to each child’s needs.

How Our Clinic Supports Families

At our clinic, we believe communication is more than just words—it’s connection.

We support children and families by:

  • Providing comprehensive evaluations

  • Creating individualized therapy plans

  • Using fun, play-based approaches

  • Coaching families on how to support skills at home

We also offer screenings if you’re unsure where your child stands—because sometimes peace of mind is just as important as intervention.

Making the Most of This Month

Better Hearing & Speech Month is a great time to:

  • Learn about communication milestones

  • Ask questions and seek guidance

  • Share resources with other families

  • Take that first step if you’ve had concerns

Final Thoughts

Every child deserves the ability to communicate, connect, and be understood.

If you’ve been wondering about your child’s speech, language, or hearing, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to navigate it alone either. PFG Therapy and it's FANTASTIC SLPs are ready to give you all the support you need!
